UNESCO IHP World’s Large Rivers Initiative

We would like to invite all participants to take part in the Session: The World‘s Large Rivers Initiative (WLRI) of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP).

It will take place on Tuesday, 22 August, from 14:00 to 16:00 in Hall E.

The focus of this session will be on discussing the structure for the WLRI. Dr. Koen Verbist from the
UNESCO IHP will introduce the IHP Flagship Initiatives and discuss the UNESCO “UN Game Changer”.
Following this, Prof. Helmut Habersack (BOKU) will provide an overview of the World‘s Large River Initiative and the
developments and outcomes of the initiative since 2011 (“Vienna Declaration” and the progress and achievements since then).

The following discussions need your input and active participation:

  1. Update and future developments of the activities
  2. Roadmap to reach the outcome of IHP IX – Assessment of up to 300 rivers.
    The end product will be a status report of up to 300 large rivers on a global scale to support member
    states, upon request, with strategies for sustainable river management.
  3. Future Structure of the WLRI to meet the guidelines.
